Again I have to ask using what settings. I have a copy of the file in
question so I'll play with it. My experiences have been so far with 1Ds
files and I don't see this.
The other question then comes to exposure. Certainly you can expose and
produce a RAW file that is so far off that we lose the detail in RAWs. This
raises an interesting question about the exposure system on the camera
system in question (or the exposure of the file itself). I'm not implying
that the photographer didn't expose the file correctly. I'm questioning if
we may have an issue here where the camera leads us to believe the exposure
is sound and the raw data doesn't reflect this. It would be interesting to
do a series of bracketed exposures in RAW and see what happens. I know with
the 1Ds, the exposure I got (using the in camera meter, not my usual Minolta
Flash Meter) produced a raw file that allowed a lot of latitude in acquiring
the resulting RAW data. I had no problems getting subtle highlight detail
(in fact, with some images, I did my best to expose for the highlights and
"develop" using Camear Raw for the shadows!).
