If ColorByte can do it why can't Epson?

I am amazed at how linear my Epson printer is on a variety of papers when
un-tagged files are sent through the ImagePrint RIP with no "recipe" chosen
! Maybe the gamut of the printer is reduced a little (haven't tested it)
but this says worlds to me about what these devices are capable of with
good software.

Is getting the device to behave in a linear fashion right out of the box
(or even close) really that hard? It was worth an extra $500 to me...
