Hi:
I've spent almost two years chasing down good output color management, and
I've come to the conclusion that output color management is impossible unless
the printer is properly linearized. It seems that the less an output profile
has to do, the better it works. Certainly, printing an unmanaged target that
presents the proper information to the profiling software is impossible
without a linearized printer. I also completely agree with this group that if
a printer is using CMYK inks, that the RIP should be managing the ink in that
color space. When examining RIPs, I placed very high importance on the RIP's
capability for automated printer linearization and for the its control over
total ink, and settled on the full Onyx RIP. Equally important, once a
profile is created, keeping it accurate depends on re-linearizing the printer
for environmental and media drifting.
