Are you using a spectroscan.

You may be having a USB comm problem. I experienced something similar. Make
sure to use a powered USB hub. You are still stuck with the USB to serial
adaptor maybe?

If it is an old serial setup like mine is, do yourself a favor and get an
Serial to PCI adaptor (Keyspan) and plug it into your PCI bus if you have
the slot. This should make those problems go away completely. Gives you four
serial ports.
