Armand, the Ultrachromes (or Epson piggies like the 10000CF) do not absorb
into the paper like the dyes. You will get this gloss differential on every
glossy media you try. Some ink and media combos will also exhibit "bronzing"
more than others, this is where the shadow regions look brownish-bronze when
the media is angled against a light. Both of these problems are overcome via
lamination, and are impossible to solve otherwise. I've found that Seal
PrintGuard UV works extremely well, and is available in 3 different finishes.
This laminate also contains UV blockers, and will protect the print from
scratches. At 3mil, it is very thin so that the prints don't feel like
placemats. It is critical that you only use these cold-pressure sensitive
laminates on the Ultrachromes, the typical heat activated laminates are way to
much for the Ultrachromes. I have Jet Guard Gloss for the Seal Ultra 44 and
the working temp for this laminate is 250 degrees which will wack the
Ultrachromes and who knows what that temperature is doing to the paper.
Brightcube had a paper called Summit which looked very much like a Ciba, but
it was very hard to handle this paper, took forever to dry, and Brightcube
went down the toilet. This paper also looked like the ink was stacked in
layers, much like a dye sub print. Personally I'd use Epson Premium Glossy
Photo Paper (250gsm) and laminate with a high gloss laminate, I think that you
will have what you are looking for with this combo. It will also provide
excellent protection if you are distributing these prints unframed. All this
is why Premium Luster paper is the paper that Epson pushes the most, it really
doesn't show a gloss differential (but does exhibit some bronzing).
