Yes, native gray balance and linearity are certainly desirable, as many of
us have been telling Epson when they recently started asking questions on the
topic. So they do seem to be interested...

The only occasion where I recall Epson creating different black generation
and related color balance functionality into a driver for an already released
device was the 2000p, when they updated its driver to offer less "metamerism"
but more graininess, by altering the black generation curve.

These issues have been covered repeatedly on Epson focused lists; not sure if
they have been mentioned on this list, with its different orientation.
