I have always known that the old saying (Could this be an oxymoron
given the short days of digital color
management?) that every CCD or CMOS chip renders colors differently
like different film emulations do/did, hence the need to profile
every chip. I now have made 20/20 profiles for seven different CCD
chips. The results using the 20/20 software have convinced me that
just like with monitors, printers, etc. you get some great chips and
some should that should have gone back. Test Test Test and send back
the curd and be grateful when you get a good one. Failures of CCD's
(I have not experienced enough CMOS chips yet to know) new out of the
box are not uncommon. I know to have a "perfect" chip is not
possible,no way, but better chip management software is. This is
perhaps more key in choosing what camera(s) we use than we
photographers would like to believe. If you buy a turkey, it's yours
to keep. Digital cameras loose their value faster than a new car.
Given the prices of a studio system be careful in your selection.
With every studio capture, and even some location work, we now have
do very little work around color correction. Thanks 20/20.
Using the same exact setup with 20/20 an older Calumet T2 back when
profiled with the 20/20 software gave splendid results. One Nikon D1x
also did. Anther Nikon D1x's profile was not so hot. The owner has
always had big color problems with that camera. The real shocker was
that three different Imacon backs, the 20/30 model, had profiles that
were spot on, wow, except for the red. A session with the color blind
edit easily fixed the red problem. We tested anew with a new Mac Beth
chart and also a studio set that had plenty of colors using one gray
balanced light. Again all colors were wonderful except the reds. I am
convinced that the problem is with the Imacon (sorry gents) and their
mathematical alga rhythms in their software and not the 20/20
profiling software. Just because you have an expensive CCD does not
mean that you have a good one or that the software driving it has
been "perfected". Many digital cameras' manufactures are constantly
tinkering and upgrading their cameras' software. I would urge others
buying any new CCD or CMOS capturing device to test it out of the box
and be ready for a smile or a fed x box. Also some cameras' software
is just plain better than others.. A great profiling tool like the
20/20 software can show results that can help in judging a chip.
There is another saying that we all are beta testers. This is
epically true with digital cameras. Double hockey sticks,!
