This thread is dragging out but let me try to summarize my findings:
99% of the problems are directly caused by interaction between PreCal
and OptiCal. The logic (lack of) is very disturbing. The programs and
the equipment appear to work just fine if all the traps are avoided.
As an engineer, I tend to fall in more traps then usual and I am a good
"bug finder" since I often follow a path on how it should be done and
then when the programmers did something backwards or unusual, I catch
it.
For example. I would expect that it is correct to carefully set the
white point to 6500K in both programs. Wrong! Set it to "native" in
Optical and 6500K in PreCal. In the first place there should only be
one place to set it in!
Similarly, for best accuracy, chose "precision mode" in OptiCal. Wrong!
It interacts with the PreCal and gets things messed up. That is why
David recommends to use standard mode.
Frustrating, I bought the ColorVison stuff so I do not have to rely on
my eyes to calibrate. Why is there this problem? Simple, the
black-point is eye-balled in PreCal and then measured and readjusted in
OptiCal.
What should be done is to use the Spyder to set the black-point and the
guns in the PreCal step. Then the next step would be to just run the
linearizing (calibrate) function.
Another obvious thing, PreCal should automatically disable any previous
calibration.
Please, for the users sanity, reduced tech-support, and more sales, fix
these programs. Just one program with three simple steps. All the hard
work is done! A good programmer would fix it in a day or two!
The single program would have three buttons:
1: Adjust monitor (PreCal). Use the Spyder to set both the black-point
and the guns.
2: Linearize (Calibrate)
3: Profile
Clean and simple! No interaction!
