In assessing the quality of a monitor profile (and thereby the instrument
that made it), there's always the unscientific method of displaying an Lab
image of the ColorChecker chart on your monitor (I have one on my site) and
visually comparing it with a real ColorChecker chart. In most aspects of
color management, science takes a backseat to appearance. Customers pay for
what they see -- they do not pay for delta E. (Hey, that rhymes!)

Being a photographer and not a color scientist I've been using this
method to verify the results when I've tested different monitors and
calibrators. The only problem with it, is that you really se how the
RGB and CMY colors in the MacBeth card is out of the gamut of the
monitors, at least on the monitors that I have tested. With a good
calibrator you get a very good match between the actual card and what
you see on the monitor on the top two rows of colors and the grey
scale on the bottom of the card. But I've never seen a red on the
monitor that is close to the red I see on the card.
