<Then the preview portion of the profile may need to be tuned. Print to
screen matching is important. I'm not saying that if you can't get this with
the profile, what the hell, just edit the image in Photoshop. I'm saying
with the best profile (both preview and output portions), editing the file
is usually necessary.>
I understand what you are saying, but take for instance the standard Epson ICC
profiles that ship with their printers. They actually preview just fantastic,
but my 2200 prints are way too magenta which of course the preview isn't going
to represent. The only way to get a neutral print would be to wack the image
with a green curve to "fix" the profile's inaccuracy which makes the image
look terrible on the screen. This is why the preview cannot always be trusted,
and a newbie would be on prozac if he or she did not understand what was going
on. You can ONLY safely softproof with good custom profiles so we need to be
very specific here, otherwise there a great chance that you'll never get the
screen to print match that is reasonable and relying on a soft proof will be
disasterous. I can't agree that editing a file is usually necessary, but that
can be pretty subjective and if you want to work that way then so be it. I can
switch medias from fine art to photo base and the contrast, color balance, and
every other attribute of a profile has created optimal color accuracy. If the
file needs work, then it isn't ready to print in the first place.
