Hi to all

Monaco is not a hardware company; their previous puck was from Sequel, as is
their current one. Other companies also OEM this devices from Sequel. The
confusion is understandable, as none of these companies really want to
advertise this fact, and would prefer that end users thought the
puck-of-the-day was specific to their implementation. As with previous
pucks,
they may or may not function with other brands of software, depending on
whether extra has been paid to make them internally brand-specific... I
never
actually saw a Chroma4 that anyone had paid to have this done to, all of
mine
ran with any implementation.

When I read pronouncements like this I begin to realize that most people
probably don't understand the nature of the business that defines Sequel.
Mr Tobie's second sentence, while not quite English, does make a point:
"Other companies also OEM this devices(sic) from Sequel"
The sentence could read:
"Other companies also OEM (THIS DEVICE) from Sequel" . That may be true,
but it is often not true.
The sentence could also read
"Other companies also OEM (DEVICES) from Sequel". This is quite correct.
We have about 5 unique calibrator platforms that are in production at any
given time. In the market place that concerns this forum there are at least
three. We design and/or recommend solutions that meet a vendor's
price/performance/time-to-market goals. Many issues have nothing to do with
color measurement per se, but the vendor's other requirements, such as
static protection or style issues dictate changes.
Independent of price and performance issues, every unit is calibrated and
certified on at least one display relative to a NIST certified measurement
instrument. Each OEM has their own unique process and reporting
requirements.
Many OEMs measure our products against standards from fine companies such
as Gretag/Macbeth, PhotoResearch, and LMT. The comparison with those
instruments is what keeps the OEM's returning. We offer an excellent
price/performance package and when used in the environment for which the
Sequel product was designed, the results speak for themselves.
Companies like HP, Dell and IBM routinely sub contract laptops from the same
factory. Do we say that these companies are no longer hardware companies
because they outsource their manufacturing of the hardware? That is a
similar manufacturing model (albeit on a much smaller scale) that we use at
Sequel: One source, many common components, varied inspection and process
operations, short time to market.
Anyone who thinks that Monaco or LaCie are not "hardware" companies, hasn't
had the opportunity to sit down with their engineering and operations
people: different faces, same issues. They have the same staffing, support,
and warranty issues that any "hardware" vendor has. They simply have
outsourced the manufacturing process (just like so many other traditional
hardware vendors) .
Personally, I've been gratified to interact with so many talented
engineering people from all of our OEM and VAR customers. It has lead to
constant improvements in product, process and cost which have, in turn, led
to better value to the customer base. That too, defines the nature of our
business.
