I haven't tried blasting HMIs six inches away from the measuring head, but the SpectroScan seems immune to any reasonable variations in ambient light, based on comparisons between running it in the dark and running it in normal daylit room light.
I'd agree on this one. We have not noticed any difference - with the exception of a low-angle sunset that once messed up a whole target. That one was pretty obvious...
