I have been using Nikon scanners both the old 2000 and the 4000 for
negatives with great succes, but they have always been beaten by the Imacon
but at a much higher price. You are not saying what sizes you are working
with but if it is 35 mm and you dont want to spend the money any of the
imacons cost have a look at the Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 and if you are on
the medium format as well try out the 8000 but do get the silverfast
scanning software to it it beats the clumsy nikon software in seconds.
There is always the possibilty to get the medium format Imacon 343 that is
a budget version but the 848 is a dream to work with, workflow and quality
is very dificult to beat. And one thing is also worth mentioning with the
Imacons the software makes sense to a photographer and you do not always to
be a prepress pro to get to grips with it.
