Michael,
I would not recommend an e-Mac for color-critical work. I've tried every
monitor profiling software but none seem to do a very good job. I seldom
find two e-Macs look the same after profiling and I've yet to see a really
good soft proof on an e-Mac. Mind you, I'm rather fussy when it comes to
soft proofing and maybe other users would be satisfied.
Don't blame Apple. They didn't aim the e-Mac at high-end color users. They
had to save costs somewhere and it seems one area was the display. A common
problem with low-cost CRTs is that the individual red, green and blue guns
drift fairly rapidly depending on the average signal strength over the whole
screen and what was displayed in the last few minutes. This means the same
RGB values can produce a different color five minutes apart, for which no
profiling software can adequately compensate.
In other respects the e-Mac is a great buy - I just wouldn't buy it for
high-end color work. But maybe your customer could live with it. If price is
so important maybe he should buy one and try it.
Have you considered the 17" iMac? I haven't used it but I hear it profiles
well.
Don
