Dear -Bill-,
If you are interested in Pantone matching on InkJet printers you should have
a look at AbsoluteProof, we have been working with Pantone for 7 months on
optimizing AbsoluteProof for Hexachrome and Pantone matching.
There are several things that have significant impact on colormatcing
capabilities of the software that drives the printer. It is not only the
correct (accurate) Pantone licensed lookup tables, it is also precise
control over individual and total ink densities but also the linearization.
The limiting factor of printers like Epson and Hewlett Packard is the
colorgamut of these devices. Currently the Epson 7600-9600 have the widest
colorgamut of CMYK printers and are capable of matching higher percentage of
Pantone colors than the HP printers.
If you look at devices that are capable of using Hexachrome inks like the
Roland, you can match up to 97% of Pantone colors. Of course the media has
an impact there as well. A good glossy media will give much better
colorgamut than a canvas. The difference between the Epson and the Roland
lies primarily in the Orange line of Pantone colors.
As you can see there are several things that have to come together to ensure
the best possible Pantone matching on an inkJet printers, there is no doubt
that all these devices are quite capable if they are correctly handled.
Pantone colors overprinting other Pantone colors might be of interest to you
as well.
If you are interested in seeing for your self contact a local dealer.
