Software licensing restrictions

It's obvious that free speech will benefit the consumer, however the
political climate in this country favors the large corporations at the
moment, in spite of their gross abuses.
I wonder what it would take to get this discussion to expand to the point
where it affected the sales figures of these companies? Hopefully this is a
start in that direction, in the meantime, if I were a sofware critic, I
would try to find a way to use the software without purchasing it
personally.
