Rich,
It depends. For some end-users you might not want to use a raster rip,
however for some, the Xphoto is a nice tool that allows you to optimize your
RGB to CMYK conversions in this raster rip.
If you are not technical these products get you very good black and white
and color results with the supplied profiles. If you are technical and want
to create profiles, you can use measuring tools to dial in the calibration
and create custom profiles.
Also, as far as I can tell there are no other third party rip products work
like Xphoto, Xproof or even the Colorburst rip. These products offer an
interesting option for linearization. You can measure the linearization
using Luminance instead of density (though you can use density). We I have
seen is that the Luminance linearization creates incredible contrast.
This group of products is a very interesting way to work to get calibrated
and optimized.
