Steve,
STEP 1.
If it's an Apple LCD screen, set the monitor to full brightness. For other
types of LCD screen set the backlight to maximum and experiment with the
(usually useless) Brightness and Contrast controls till a neutral RGB gray
scale exhibits maximum white and black with no clipping.
STEP 2.
Make sure the ambient lighting is balanced to a similar level, so the screen
doesn't seem too bright.
STEP 3.
Skip the brightness and contrast sections of PM 4.1.5
STEP 4.
Adjust the white point in PM 4.1.5 to the same visual 'color' as your
ambient lighting (you may have to iterate) then go straight to building the
profile.
