I don't believe Epson ever offered a dye inkset for this machine, so this
brings up the issues of what dyes are being used, and what settings are being
used to drive the machine...

The black generation that the 3000 and 5000 were designed for, with their dye
inks, was a very skeletal black with K used only for actual blacks, and CMY
blends being used for dark grays and other dark colors. The 5500 was the first
driver that used the new metamerism reducing Gray Component Removal scheme
where as much color was removed as possible from all dark blends, and replaced
with black ink, which isn't too grainy, since the dots are so small. In the 7600
and 9600 its now light black that is used for these mixes, but in the newer
2000p driver, and the 5500 and 10000/15000 drivers, its black that is used. So
when developing a Black generation formula for the 5500 with dye inks, you
would probably want to consider this difference.
