The following is my method:
Creating Drop Shadows in cmyk with k only.
1. Create a drop out mask for the image/object of FileX.
2. Add a second layer (layer 1) and fill with white. Drag new layer below image layer
(name it layer 0).
3. Create drop shadow in rgb mode on layer 1. Go back to layer 0, and clear background
using dropout mask. You should now see drop shadow behind objsct.
4. Create duplicate file (FileX copy), delete layer 1 (drop shadow), and convert layer 0
(main image) to cmyk.
5. Add new layer (layer 1) to FileX copy (in cmyk mode), fill with white, and drag below
layer 0.
6. Go back to rgb FileX with drop shadow, and make another duplicate FileX copy2.
Delete layer 0 (main image), leaving only drop shadow Layer 1.
7. Convert drop shadow image from rgb to gray scale.
8. Go back to cmyk file. Hide layer 0 (containing image/object), activate layer 1 (which
is below layer 0), and activate black channel.
9. Go to Image>Apply Image, and select Source = FileX copy2, Layer = Layer 1,
Channel = Black. The Target should be FileX copy (Layer 1, Black), Blending = Normal,
Opacity = 100%.
Your drop shadow should now be in the black channel only. At this point I usually do
unsharpmasking on only the image layer, and then merge the layers.
