Dear Armand,
there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it has a neutral tone!
The Epson 2200 prints up to 13" x 19" (Super B) for cut sheets, and up to
13" x 44" for paper rolls, and is being used successfully by many
photographers (usually a demanding bunch indeed! ...and I should know being
one myself) to produce rather neutral grayscale images using the full set of
7 UltraChrome inks that are standard in this pigment-based inkjet printer,
as well as on the Epson 10600, 9600 and 7600 for larger prints than
letter-size. I have not used the 2200 directly, but I have heard very good
reviews from people whose judgment I value highly.
The solution that you mention, that of printing using only the black ink, is
unsatisfying to me, personally, because I do perceive a disturbing
granularity in the image, due to the absence of carefully placed and spaced
dots of other ink colors (C, M, Y and the other ones present depending on
the sets used in different inkjet printheads) that are vital to creating the
appearance of a smooth image.
The Epson 2200 is currently priced at $699.95, which may not meet your
definition of "inexpensive", although I would strongly advise you at least
to explore this very promising technology. Best of luck to you.
