A few more nice features I left out of my last post regarding the Canon
S9000:
= OPTICAL ink level detection - it actually reads ink levels in real time on
each individual tank. Activates when around 20% ink is left. And it doesn't
stop you from printing - you can keep using them anyway until you KNOW they
are dry (like when colors stop showing up). No "estimated level based on
use" type ink warnings like you get from the desktop Epson's. Also the
Epson's give you all those damn warnings and insist you change the inks at
the first inkling (pun intended) of low levels - whether accurate or not.
= No computer chips on ink tanks. Epson on the other hand... well you get
the point. All those hassles the chips create with 3rd party inksets and
refills. Not that I like to refill them myself - but why stop those who want
to? Just another user-friendly aspect that shows Canon isn't fanatical about
limiting people's choices by trying to force the end-user to only use their
brand of inks. Epson? We all know the deal there.
It's worth mentioning that the Canon Photo Paper Pro papers I used (top of
their paper line) aren't cheap. Then again neither is the Epson Archival
Matte, so Canon is no different in that regard. But if your a photo
professional interested in quality and accuracy, you shouldn't be thinking
CHEAP anyway. It only makes your imaging life tougher, eh? For archival
quality prints (with Canon's inks and these papers) they are rated by Canon
at 25 years. I'm sure that could be extended even further with UV protective
fixative, mounting under UV resistant glass or other post-print archival
techniques used by pros who make a priority out of such things.
