Or should I use something else?
Probably would work fine. I've used my Spectrolino/Spectroscan for reading
fabrics and it seemed to work just fine. I'm not sure about using it in
strip reading mode on a textured surface though. Taking multiple
measurements in "patch" mode to get a good average might be your best bet.
In addition to the ColorEye that Neil mentioned, the 8mm (wider aperture)
version of the Spectrolino/Spectroscan may also be an option. Experimenting
using the polarization filter on the Spectrolino might be worth a try also.
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if that filter is
available on the 8mm version.
Here's a snip from the Gretag price list on the two instruments:

The filters seem to be conspicuice by their absence in the 8mm version so I
would ASSUME they are not available. The mention of "rougher surfaces" seems
to be a good indication that it may work well for canvas. In fact, further
down in the price list under accessories, it's mentioned that the filters
are available only for the 4.5mm version. I guess that settles it. But the
8mm version would still be worth taking a look at for your application.
IMO, while the Spectrolino/Spectroscan may not be the fastest device out
there, it's still the Swiss Army Knife of spectros. (pun intended). I know
that I couldn't leave home without it!
