There has long been a netiquette guide from Apple. Commercial postings are discouraged, as is not editing included messages, see http://lists.apple.com/rules.shtml. The Apple archives protect us against harvesting of addresses for advertising purposes, too. But there is clearly a higher sensitivity here in Europe than there is in the States towards the commercial component in postings. In Europe events are to a greater extent driven at trans-company and trans-national level, in the States events are driven more at company level. Similarly, at the personal level people in the States regularly advertise hardware and software on the List where people here in Europe seem to think of the web as more of a formal publishing medium. In the States a company is a macrocosm, a person a microcosm of the same individualism in the marketplace. The web is a medium that bypasses both these approaches which is why we get to discuss these things. Perhaps the web is what we make of it, but it always allows person-to-person sharing of information, which is it's greatest practical and ethical benefit. Maybe the difference in this case is that there has been no contribution in the past. Participating in threads and sharing information is what makes the web useful to us all, but not abrupt announcements.
