My boss has been presented with the opportunity to
purchase a used Epson 10000 (dye inks) for $3,500.
Since he wants to act on the offer by tomorrow, I'd
like to hear input from anyone who's familiar with
this system and other systems we may want to consider,
such as the Epson 10600, HP 5000, and HP 5500. (I hate
to be one of those guys who asks for info that I could
find if I spent the time to look through the colorsync
archives, but since there's a time crunch I'd
appreciate any feedback while I try to skim through
the archives).
A little bit about our company: we're a pre-press
house and commercial sheetfed printer (two 40" 5-color
presses) averaging about 2 million in yearly sales. We
make conventional or digital Matchprints for about 85%
of the jobs that come in; the remainder for which
color isn't critical require only the forms proofs off
of our HP 3800CP injket (which isn't terribly
accurate). We have Heidelberg's Delta workflow, so
we'll use Best's Colorproof as it can work with Delta
Lists. The new inkjet system that we will be getting
will be used almost exclusively for press proofs,
although we're seeing increased business in our
digital photography studio and would like to start
doing some fine art prints with the system.
I'd like to hear first on the issue of the 10000's dye
ink metamerism issues and how bad they are. That is,
would you not recommend the 10000 unit b/c of it since
the 10600 with the Ultrachrome inks is now available?
Have the HP inksets been free of metamerism issues?
How is the stability of the 10000 inkset, as well as
that of hte HPs?
Second, I'd like to hear about the overall quality of
prints off the Epson units versus the HPs. Is one
smoother than the others? Is one more prone to banding
than the others? Is one more variable than the others,
requiring frustratingly frequent relinearization
and/or profiling?
Third, because this is a used Epson 10000, I'd like to
hear about the reliability (or lack thereof) of this
and other units such as the HPs.
Fourth, I'd like to hear about the difference in
speeds in the units if they are at all significantly
different.
Fifth, I'd like to hear recommendations for the
computer on which we'll be running the BEST RIP. I'm
inclined to invest in a server with an IDE RAID rather
than much more expensive SCSI solution. I figure (and
please tell me if I'm off base here) that the speed of
the processor will probably have a bigger impact on
performance than the disk subsystem.
Thanks for your input!
