Always eager to reveal my ignorance to the world, I have to confess I'm not
getting the concept of applying a "rendering intent" (gamut
mapping/compression/clipping) on a Device->PCS transform. Why would this be
anything other than a straight colorimetric conversion with the "intent"
(mapping/compression/clipping/whatever) handled only on the PCS->Device side
of the conversion.
More to the point, why would there even BE the need for some sort of
rendering intent required on the Device->PCS given that all colors in the
Device can be accurately mapped to the PCS (Lab) space? What on the device
side could be considered "out of gamut" that a rendering intent needs even
to be considered?
To FURTHER complicate things, this would imply at least the possibility of
applying one rendering intent on the Device->PCS side and DIFFERENT one on
the PCS->Device side. But where is the mechanism for this? Or said another
way.....
I think you get what I'm after.
