Glen,
The problem you encountered with the Apple flat panel display is
common. My understanding is that the issue is not as great with the new
20" Apple Cinema Display. With the 20" Apple Cinema Display you also
get the bonus of the brightness being 230 cd/m2. The good part is that
unlike CRT based monitors you don't have fading phosphors. Despite this
one drawback (CRTs have similar problems), I think the Apple Cinema
Display is the best solution on the market - brighter screen, fully
digital, sharper image, no fading phosphors, wider screen, lighter, and
smaller footprint.
Another related Item of interest - I am using using a Barco PCal and
softproofing has not been an issue. It displays even yellows, purples,
blues, and fully saturated colors correctly. The problem I have
encountered is that some of my photographic clients are not displaying
these colors correctly. We tried all the standard solutions and none
solved the problem. Don Hutcheson then told me that ICS's basiCColor
Display had resolved this problem by using 3D tables. We finally had a
chance to try it out yesterday. Presto, chango, it works. All the above
mentioned problems gone. Colors display correctly. If you are using an
Apple Cinema Display, you also get the bonus of an all digital system.
So unlike CRT monitors your color doesn't start to drift two minutes
after calibration. You can go a few months without recalibrating. The
great part is that with an instrument this solution is just as
affordable as all the others - $349. Given this success, we've decided
to sell this solution.

Damon
