Sam,
Though the results MAY be the same on the final output, there are
differences between the methods. Changing modes does indeed dictate
conversion profiles, but only in tag form. If the final output device does
not support profiles (i.e. legacy devices or service provider preferences,
etc.) these settings are ignored. Performing a profile to profile remaps the
actual values in the image file, thus altering the file to achieve the
desired result. As always, it is best to call your provider prior to
starting any job, to verify their preffered CM workflow and job submission
specs.
John,
Doing a conversion via mode change produces identical results to
doing a conversion with Convert to Profile using the same settings
for rendering intent, BPC and engine.
I don't understand what you mean by
"Changing modes does indeed dictate
conversion profiles, but only in tag form."
but I can assure you that mode change alters the file, just as
Convert to Profile does.
