The Nexscan is no longer sold but you might find one second-hand. we have a
truckload of them and they are very reliable workhorses but we gang-scan
everything so I can't tell you how well Linocolor works in batch mode. You'd
know that better than me if you already have a Topaz. you're stuck in OS9
with this machine unless you buy a PC to run Newcolor. Yes I know Newcolor
is available for OS X but it is worthless: it crashes often and is glacially
slow. I've been trying to get a refund on it from Heidelberg for months but
no luck yet. Nexscan is SCSI-only.
We just got a Creo iqsmart3 in for testing as a replacement for the Nexscan.
it has a mask that holds 40 35mm mounted transparencies. There's no problem
with enlargements anywhere on the glass unlike the Topaz. If noise is an
issue, the Creo makes lots of annoying whining sounds (like the cat on a
catnip binge or me first thing in the morning). Supposedly the software
works in OS X but I haven't been able to get it to see the scanner in X, so
I use it in 9. It uses Firewire, not sure if SCSI is an option.
both machines have pin bars but the Creo doesn't have a removable top glass
like the Nexscan which would make oil-mounts easier.
dunno about the Fuji. there's also the Screen Cezanne if they're still
making it.
HTH.
