Am I the only one who finds it is absurd that Eye One can measure ambient light with Eye One Share but the "high end" Spectrolino/Profile Maker 4.x can not?.

Surely this is down to the software.
in addition to Bruce's comments, the ambient reading is dependent on the presence of a 0 degree diffusion head of some sort. The 'Lino, and the older eye-one has no such head so using them for ambient readings is not suggested.
Also, there are firmware changes in the newer Eye-Ones that allow it to do the ambient readings. It is not suggested (perhaps even possible) to use a new ambient filter on an older Eye-One.... I think GretagMacbeth may be evaluating an upgrade path for older Eye-One hardware but one has not yet been announced .... that I can remember..
