This class has grown out of feedback we=B9ve received while running the San
Francisco Digital Imaging Users Group (SFDIG) for the last six months.
Color Management is the =B3glue=B2 that holds the digital imaging workflow
together. Yet it can be a very technical and confusing topic. It doesn=B9t
need to be that way.

SFDIG is planning a series of classes on color management: Introductory,
Intermediate, and Advanced. On June 4th, we will hold the first of the
classes, =B3Introduction to Color Management=B2 at Blue Sky Studios. This
3-hour class (you can sign up for the morning or afternoon session) is
designed for digital imaging professionals who are either just getting in t=
o
color management or who don=B9t know the first thing about it. The tone of
the class will be kept =B3light=B2, with an emphasis on imparting interesting
and readily applicable knowledge. We will make sure the discussion topics
don=B9t get overly technical or esoteric. Noone will be asked to paint the
walls of their office an ANSI-approved shade of gray or to wear a black
smock while sitting in front of their monitor.
The class size is small (25 students), in order to foster good
communication, and we will allocate plenty of time for Q & A.

Topics Include:
- Color Theory (the difference between RGB & CMYK, why you can=B9t alway=
s
trust your eyes)
- ICC-based color management (what is a profile, how does it work with
Apple Colorsync and Windows ICM)
- Monitor calibration (visual vs instrument based, calibration vs
characterization)
- Color settings in Photoshop (color working spaces, responding to
color related dialog boxes)
- Color managed printing from Photoshop to an inkjet printer
- Softproofing - how to see on screen what is actually going to print
- Simulation - getting prints on your in-house printer (e.g., inkjet o=
r
color copier) that simulates final print conditions (e.g., a printing press=
)
- Lots of Q&A
=B3Real World Color Management=B2 by Bruce Fraser et al will be provide to all
attendees. This is an excellent technical resource and will be frequently
referenced during the later intermediate and advanced color management
classes.
Spots for this class are available on a first-come first-serve basis.
Please call Clark Omholt at 415-845-9756, with your credit card info in han=
d
to reserve a spot.
SFDIG is open to all professionals involved in digital imaging, such as
photographers, designers, prepress providers, etc. The intention is to hel=
p
attendees develop their knowledge of "best practices" in digital imaging an=
d
to provide a forum for discussion with colleagues. If you'd like to be adde=
d
to or removed from the distribution list, please write to
email@hidden stating your request.
