Ilford made an announcement at PMA I think list members will be very
interested in. They will soon be shipping their own desktop inkjet
drivers which have been customised for Ilford's own Galerie media.

I think many of you will find this interesting for several reasons:
1. These drivers are targeted for pure high quality photographic use and
therefore are free from the restrictions that can be found in some of
the more general use OEM drivers. For example they provide full access
to the printer gamut.
2. It is my understanding that Ilford will make it very clear what the
input colour space(s) to the driver are. I think Photoshop users will be
particularly happy ;)
3. They produce an excellent screen to printer match.
4. The internal colour tables make use of ICC based technology to
perform full RGB to CMY(K) transforms with all the fidelity available to
Postscript RIPs.
4. The technology used to produce the drivers supports the creation and
processing of CMY(K) ICC printer profiles as if it were a Postscript
RIP. As a result ICC technology is used to perform the full RGB to
CMY(K) separation for high quality colour.

IMO this kind of solution will become increasingly the norm in the third
party ink and media marketplace. This will be good news for users. It
ought to become simpler and perhaps cheaper to try third party
consumables. You will have an alternative to the OEMs own driver. They
will be a boon for people whose needs are not met by the OEM driver, but
don't wish to spend thousands of dollars on a Postscript RIP just to get
better colour. Basically excellent colour at little cost.

To be entirely transparent I should point out I played a part in the
development of the technology that Ilford used.
