I had wrongly presumed (fraught with danger) that Relative

accurately than Perceptual which rounds off to take into account any out of

I'm not sure I'm following you. Are you saying you've found the preferred
intent is Perceptual? That doesn't factor in when you specifically ask for a
different intent in say Photoshop (convert to profile). Also, some
conversions are always working with a RelCol intent no matter what you pick.

Like all matrix profiles, Adobe RGB only contains a single rendering
intent. Matrix profiles contain one rendering intent, table-based
profiles contain three. In both cases, Absolute Colorimetric
rendering is calculated from the Relative Colorimetric table.
Most profiles are created with the Perceptual flag as the default RI,
but in the case of Adobe RGB (and the other matrix working space
profiles), conversions between the matrix profile and the PCS are
relcol (unless you choose AbsCol). If you test conversions between
Adobe RGB and Lab or between Adobe RGB and another matrix profile,
you'll find that Perceptual, RelCol and Saturation all produce
identical results.
If a table-based profile is involved, you'll get different results
because, while the conversion between Adobe RGB and the PCS is always
relcol, the conversion between the table-based profile and the PCS
will use the selected RI.
