Calibration chart (: a test chart is for characterization).
I was using the term generically (ie. it's a chart that
is used to test the response of the printer.)

Sure, but the goal for the DesignJet printing pipeline cannot

whatever papers.
Of course it can. The limitations it has are unnecessary. Provide
the sensor readings as absolute, and it's dead easy to subtract
out the paper value. Subtract it out in the printer, and
the information is lost. The difficulty with the chart
layout and recognition are on a different level, but it
really isn't as hard as HP make out, to create something that
is more robust, and considerably more flexible (been there,
done that). The chart recognition seems so fussy that it won't
work unless the printer response is within very tight bounds. This
is rather a catch-22 when the chart is being read to perform calibration...
HP have gone to all the trouble of adding this feature (and a great idea
it is), but haven't gone the last 10% needed to make it useful to external RIPs.
What a pitty.

There are lots of solutions (any decent RIP should have one), but the
whole point of the HP offering was that you got it with the printer.
No additional instruments needed (cost and convenience.)
[I've never really seen the point of BESTColor Remote Proof solution -
a system to check the proofing results, because the RIPs calibration
system is so bad that you can't trust what it produces ??]
