The San Francisco Art Institute is inviting you to enroll in one or a series
of photography workshops this summer. Students may register for these
workshops on a credit or noncredit basis beginning May 12, 2003. To

Digital Negatives and the Fine-Art Platinum Print (3 weeks) DM-220-0

Five concentrated days of hands-on digital imaging and negative making with
Dan Burkholder. This workshop is designed for photographers who wish to make
beautiful, archival contact prints (Platinum/Palladium, Silver Gelatin,
Cyanotype, etc.) while taking advantage of the power and precision of
digital imaging. Hands-on sessions and demonstrations will address
everything from scanning and image editing to the production of the final
digital negative. Students will learn the latest methods for making digital
negatives from inkjet printers, prepare images for imagesetter output, print
from digital negatives in platinum/palladium, learn the basics of scanning
and digital manipulations, learn Dan's special pigment-over-platinum
technique, and more.
Part Two: June 9-20, M-F 9:00-12:30 / 1:00-4:00
Ten days of Hands-on Creation

the Platinum and Palladium Print with Keith Schreiber, including a class
visit by photographer Andrea Modica. The first week we will learn how to
prepare solutions and hand-coat the paper, use traditional and digital
methods as an introduction to contrast control techniques, and examine ways
of varying image color to archive the desired effect on student's choice of
paper. The second week will be devoted to printing students' negatives with
the goal of producing a small body of work.

A workshop with an emphasis on Epson professional printers and comprehension
of color management with Joseph Holmes,
the creator of Ekta Space PS 5, author of ColorBlind Prove It! software
and three photography books. Topics covered during the five days will
include: understanding film and image capture, digital camera systems; color
management; imaging workflows for fine printing in color; scanning issues
and goals for excellent scans; image editing; printer and printmaking
issues; offset lithography; printing presses and other lithographic systems.

A two-week session in SFAI's Center for Digital Media and
Photography Department's Digital Darkroom with Michael Creedon. One-on-one
attention to the quality of the printed image and in-depth exploration of
the topics from part one of this class. Scrutiny of scanning, introduction
to profile making, aesthetics of paper choice
and ink use will be emphasized.

Part Two: Aug. 4-Aug 15, M-F 9:00-12:30 / 1:00-4:00
Expand your creativity and transform your photographs into painterly images
with Polaroid film. Using Polaroid SX-70 and
600 series cameras and 35mm slide printers (all provided in the workshops)
participants will learn to transfer, manipulate and
hand-color their images so that the distinction between photographs and
paintings is blurred. The first week of the course taught by Kathleen Carr,
author of "Polaroid Transfers" and the new "Polaroid Manipulations" (Amphoto
Books 1997, 2002).
The following two weeks, taught by Michael Creedon, expand on the digital
techniques of scanning, Photoshop enhancement and printing. Participants may
sign up for just the first week, or for the entire three weeks.
