I would like to introduce myself to the members of this great mailing list.
I have lurked here quite a while, and learned a lot of useful information. I
do fine art reproduction and color management services in San Diego.
I don't have any direct experience with the HP 10ps, but I have a lot of
experience with an HP 5000ps with UV inks, which uses a similar, if not
identical calibration system. When I bought the printer, I too was lulled
into thinking that the built-in linearization would work well, at least on
HP branded media. The built-in system does do a good job of keeping the
printer in a known state, which prints gray tones with a slightly greenish
cast. HP did have a run of bad sensors which produced very green casts, but
my printer has been checked and is within factory specifications. If you
talk to HP about this, no one seems to understand what the issue is, and
they seem blind to it. At the 2003 PMA show I talked to many other HP 5000
users who had experienced the same problem. And lo and behold, as I walked
around the HP booth, I realized why they are literally blind to this
problem. Every monochrome image in the booth, which was obviously printed
with care by an experienced HP technician, had the same slightly greenish
cast! This printer is a wonderful piece of engineering, and with the right
external RIP, and careful linearization/profiling, it can be made to perform
very well. IMHO though, the built-in calibration is not worth much.
