I'm a Capture User too but I'm trying to understand ACRII so I can have
less software in the workflow (PC). Yesterday I downloaded a movie demo
from Dr. Russell Brown and I was amazed with the new browser of Pshp CS,
ACRII and even the Dr. Brown Image Processor.
As Henry points out, what I like about Capture is that I can modify the
NEF file without changing it. For example I can tweak a NEF image and
change exposure, WB, etc, then save this image to TIF (prints) and JPEG
(Web). If I later decide that I want to change again the file, I can
open the NEF file in capture and all the tweaks I did before are there
so I can adjust over the previous changes and save again to TIF and
JPEG. But those changes to the NEF files are just read by Capture
because if I open that NEF with ACR, Bibble, etc, it is opened like an
untouched RAW file.
As I understand ACRII (but may be wrong) you tweak the RAW file, now
with the new file browser of PS CR is as easy as Capture to group files
that require the same changes, then proceed to batch and save as TIF,
JPEG or PSD (I don't understand the advantage to have a PSD file??). The
original RAW file (NEF for me) is not changed but if I later wants to
re-tweak and open that RAW file, the changes I did before are lost, so I
start again with the original RAW file. That is the beauty of Capture
and even Bible with the .bib file.
This thread has been very helpful. Is there any suggested site or
upcoming book that explains the workflow of ACRII?. I shot using Adobe
RGB and I still don't understand the workflow I need to follow in ACRII
when you guys (Andrew) said that this program "uses two 'Proprietary'
built in profiles as input source for conversion into that four spaces".
Does it mean that even if I decide to stand with adobe RGB in my files,
there is a conversion of the source adobe RGB (from the camera) to adobe
RGB space in photoshop processed by ACR???
Thanks in advance and best regards
Jw

Once the file is processed in ACR, you have to save it. You

remains untouched, much like how we used to deal with PhotoCD images.
