My comments were not intended to disrespect you, nor any of your colleagues
who employ ACR with such great success. I see nothing wrong with producing
good work with ACR if it fits your style and the parameters of the
assignment, etc. I've never disputed the fact that many fine photographers
find it to be a useful tool. Many even promote it on behalf of Adobe to
great effect and, I am sure, mutual benefit. I have a really close friend
who is a very prolific advertising shooter, whose style and subject matter
allow him to be creative with all aspects of the images he produces,
including color renditions that bear little or no resemblance to reality.
Camera profiles are of little use to him. The only reason I even joined in
in this discussion was that when someone on a list devoted to Colorsync
issues asks what I think is a legitimate question about the possibility of
implementing camera profiles with ACR, instead of a simple, "sorry, ACR
doesn't allow for custom profiles, try "XXX" which does", we are soon
treated to a "why in the world would you want to do that"-style diatribe on
the uselessness of camera profiles.

No, actually, none of this would apply. I spent a fair amount of time with
ACR, and I use actions and droplets to perform batch operations in Photoshop
daily. Moreover, now that Bruce has taken the time to explain a bit more of
the inner workings, and why ACR can't (as opposed to won't) use profiles,
you won't hear any more requests from me that they consider it. I'd
originally hoped that custom profile support could be rolled into future
versions, making it a tool more suited to the way some of us choose to work.
It's obviously not practical. I'll even take another look at it in it's new
incarnation in PS-CS, once I move to that from PS7.
I will, however speak up to defend those of us who have found camera
profiling to be useful when presented with the condescending comments of
"why would you want to use a camera profile" and "you must make a new
profile for every lighting condition". ACR has it's ways of doing things,
some of us have found other tools that work for us which DO allow for using
profiles, such as C1DSLR. Isn't that okay with you? You have never heard me
advocate in favor of using a camera manufacturer's software. The fact that
the camera manufacturers' software is poor at best is something we can all
agree on, and I have stated so many times in many places. Frankly, they're
an embarrassment, IMHO. I suppose Nikon has had to admit that by giving up
on trying to actually get people to pay cash money for it!
As for who is in a pissing match and/or on a high horse, I will let the
others on the list judge the tone and content of my messages against those
made earlier by Andrew, and now this message from you.
