Tom,
I just found out that Xerox has endowed the Phaser 7700 with an effective
means of completely disabling color matching at the driver level! I just
tried one yesterday and it profiled well. The only problem is with the poor
magenta and cyan toner pigment: magenta is never saturated enough and the
cyan really looks blue. It does great blues (cyan + magenta) but unaceptably
poor reds (magenta + yellow) looks awfully orangish to my eye.
In contrast, the prints I received from Xante have more life. Thank's to the
richer magenta toner they use. I don't know if that's your experience as
well? But I have the impression it will yield a larger gamut size than the
Phaser 7700. I'll know more later in the week when I lay my hands on the
Okidata 9500dxn.
The only problem with the Xante (and the Oki) is the moiri pattern clearly
visible in the screens. That effect is nonexistent in the Phaser because it
is a true laser whereas the xante is an LED laser. I don't know the
difference enough between these two technologies to explain why the artefact
but the difference is somewhat annoying.
