In Germany there is a close cooperation between the BVDM (German
Association of Printers and PrePress companies), ECI (European Colour
Initiative), Fogra/Ugra (Research on Printing and Media) and IFRA
(International Research on Publishing and Printing for Newspapers). They
release the combination of standards for profiles, proofing, printing, ink,
measurements and quality.
Within short (2004) they will make available complete sets of digital and
printed information (included test charts and printed results based on ISO
12647-2 and 3 and 2846-1 and 2) for German and international printers.
The Altona test suite is part of that package.
Please also see www.altonatestsuite.com english version, for more information.
It looks that the Germans are far better understanding why the ISO
standards for ink and printing (combined with guidelines how to reach the
goals) will benefit all printers willing to exploit the goodies of PDF/X,
ICC-workflows in an international setting.
It looks that all other European partners are willing to follow them. And
even non-Europeans!!
Some contributors to this community expected that those ECI/Fogra tests
only would benefit the evangelists (and users) of PDF/X-3.
In my opinion using these standards will benefit all printers even if they
don't (yet) use PSF/X or it's derivated Certified PDF.
Any comments?
Regards, Henk
