With the loss of film we have also lost the laminate proof. Linear film
setters plus very tight process control of laminate proofs gave us a very
tight standard target to align our presses. With CTP we now have digital
control over the entire prepress system. However, we don't have standard
aiming points. SWOP has gotten close with TR001. This is a colormeteric
aiming point. However, TR001 is not the official aiming point for SWOP
approval. Rather, it a press sheet from the most recent approved run.
We need to establish numerical, objective, colormeteric standards and
tolorancing methods. SWOP and GRACOL are working in this direction.
It would also require us to us statistical process control on our presses.
i.e. we must learn to print by the numbers.
While some printers want to establish their own special standards to
differentiate themselves, we also need to be able to print to some basic
standards. The custom special standards require that the printer do the
separator in-house to there standards. This requires that they be able to
handle wide gamut RGB files that can be repurposed to there local standard.
"Digital Image Submission Criteria" (DISC) is trying to establish standard
for submitting this type of file. It won't work if the printers don't know
how to separate these files.
See "www.disc-info.org" for more information.
If we are going to print CMYK files they must be separated to known
standards. If we are going to print to local custom standards then we have
to be able to accept RGB files and do the separations in house. These RGB
files are the equivalent of film tranies. When you get film you have to
scan it, color correct it, and gamut compress it for the printing method you
are using. The same applies to digital files.
My two cents,
Ray
