There is a traditional distinction between creative TIFF and the rest
of the world, but it does not follow that creative TIFF should seek to
remain its island isolated from the world at large -:).
Suppose the professional photographer is part of a color managed
workflow from photo studio to graphics studio to pressroom. The
graphics studio and the pressroom organize the page proofs as PDF/X-3
with OutputIntent, and the photo studio does what?
You see, if the photo studio wishes to take part in the game of
pleasing the client, it is no longer a matter of handing off a chrome
to a scanner operator, but of protecting the added value of image
editing by participating in the color management chain.
And this is only possible by participating in the PDF chain. The
problem for the photo studio is to stop thinking of the loose image and
start thinking of the page.

The challenge is to get a RIP on the street that is as PDF-centric and
desktop-centric as InDesign. What do you do when you get a
professionally color managed PDF in the stages where in the past
couriers would be carting around? You need to be able to hook up the
spectro, measure the remote proof, discuss the length and breadth of
the photo studio / graphic studio / pressroom chain. I'd say the
challenge has been met at this point. It's the user mindset that's the
problem.
Since 1998 I've wished the non-PostScript workflows would melt away
because to my way of thinking they are rooted in a mindset which is at
least a decade behind the times. There, it's the same restatement all
the way back to 1998 -:).
Thanks,
Henrik
