I had a PIII (upgraded from PII) and tested it before I sold it next to my
newer 848. I did see cleaner shadows as far as noise was concerned. So yes I
think the newer unit does produce a cleaner scan in dark regions. With max
scans at 100%, the difference was quite visible on screen. The auto focus
also helps (scans set to NO USM on both units, I saw a sharper appearing
scan with the 848). It's a lot faster, you don't have to screw with SCSI
(which is really nice) and its a heck of a lot faster.
