Bruce, Andrew & Derek have replied with several
differences....I'll add two more:
1) The 848 uses a new light source with 1 F-stop more
illumination. This allows Imacon to stop down the lens
by 1 stop, giving better depth of field. Even without
using auto focus or USM, it's the likely reason folks
see a bit sharper scan with the 848.
2) If you scan negatives with a Precision and are
REALLY picky like I am, you'll notice very subtle
banding in the direction of the carrier movement in
higher-contrast blue skies. This "enhancement" was
eliminated on the new-generation scanners.
