this is only half the story though - the profile is *available* to all
users but
a) it needs to be selected by each user
b) if users roam machines then the system falls down
so everything falls at the final hurdle, as it were. what is needed is
to tie the profile selection to the machine not user.
so has anyone worked out how, upon login to a machine, to automatically
push the machine's profile setting to the user?
with the linux and irix versions of OptiCAL, you can run it specifying
a location to store the profiles, so to achieve calibrations tied to
the machine rather than user account optical is invoked in the .login
set to read the profile from a common local location on every box. for
the macs i have a bodge that works kinda in this fashion - we use a
common profile name throughout our macs, so coloursync always gets the
appropriate profile in what it thinks is the same profile each time.
but this is still barely a workaround even as i cannot push the setting
out to all user accounts as not everyone uses macs and would appreciate
seeing some random path appear in their *nix home directory.

Instead of each monitor being profiled once a month, now each monitor

With 1000+ students using our design labs I can't see how this is
going to
work.
You won't get any argument from me; OptiCAL places the monitor profile
in the
main Library, not in each user's Library for these very reasons...
other
applications may choose to do things differently.
