Well, let's not forget we're talking Polaroid. Cf.: Why implement
high-bit scanning and not allow users access to high-bit data?
Anyway none of the
Polaroid scanners has infrared hardware for dust detection.
...
the Nikon LS 2000 was the first desktop filmscanner to get that
system.
You could well be correct about *that* system. But no one ever said
there is only one way to use IR data. Just a thought.
Just trying to help .............. and the Polaroid SS120 has an
OS X driver ....didn't check whether the D&S software runs on OS
X ..... you could do that.
I am grateful for the suggestion, and I would even follow it if only
I had any interest in a new Polaroid scanner. But even if Polaroid's
new "driver" is OSX challenged (and I don't believe it is, actually),
both VueScan and Silverfast support the *last* batch of Polaroid
scanners under OSX. That's not the problem.
With a five year old scanner in use it is sensible to think of a
replacement and then it is nice to have the software already that
will drive it.
Yes, I got started down this garden path thinking I'd get rid of that
ancient (5 years! oh my!) Polaroid SS35+. But now I don't know about
replacing it anymore, and software is too ephemeral to sit around and
wait for hardware upgrades. The point I was making was: with the
new-found abilities of my SS35+ as controlled by VueScan, I see only
2 reasons to upgrade: higher resolution and better connection
(eliminate SCSI). Both are valid points, but neither is compelling
(to me).
I recently had an opportunity to compare scans from my SS35+ to a
Nikon 8000 (same 35mm slides, Fuji Sensia/Provia/Velvia film). I
found the differences (in shadows and highlights for example)
surprisingly difficult to spot. The averaging on the 8000 made little
if any difference. The 8000's D&S filter did help, but not without
compromise. Except for the ICE, no matter what I did to the 8000 I
couldn't get a scan that was substantially different (in terms of
noise and/or dynamic range) than what I already had from my SS35+.
There was detail in the pieces of film that neither scanner could
pull out. Feel free to assign this conclusion to my lack of ability
if you will.
But
Silverfast dropped the SS35 support and I don't think they are
very interested in any Polaroid scanner at the moment.
I see their point.
Negative colour profiles based on making negatives of reflective
IT8 targets etc etc must be taken with a great lump of salt.
Yes, but I'm trying to limit my salt intake on doctor orders. If I
may stray from theory into practice for one picosecond: Has anybody
actually tried to profile negative film? Did it spontaneously combust
by any chance?
