For those who are interested: Canon has published an "EOS Digital
Workflow Guide" on CD that includes an excellent introduction to
color management. IMHO it would serve as an excellent handout for the
color-uninitiated who might cross your path. It's from a
photographer's perspective, but it's not specific to Canon in almost
any way. Even Nikon shooters would likely benefit ;-) Perhaps even
Minolta shooters (though I don't know if they'd have access to a
digital SLR yet...)
The CD doesn't contain anything new for the regulars on this list,
but it seems to me it might be useful for handing out to those who
(for example) refuse to upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop
because they don't want to deal with color management...
I almost threw out the CD when I found it pasted into my latest issue
of PEI magazine, along with various subscription cards and ads that I
generally discard before I start reading. But I decided to take a
look and was pleasantly surprised. It turns out to be an excellent
general introduction to color management -- all the info that a new
user (photographer) really needs.
The CD is fairly agnostic when it comes to color management software
and hardware companies (though it does give more play to the bigger
players). It's also fairly agnostic when it comes to software (though
Photoshop has center stage, not unexpectedly). So if you ignore the
Canon brand on all the bodies, lenses and printers shown in the
pictures (think of it as a "word from the sponsor"), all of the info
is quite general and useful to everyone (and most specifically to
photographers). Very well done, with a variety of options presented
and explained (what a concept!) and very middle of the road and down
to earth. I am impressed.
Interestingly, many of the screen shots on the CD are clearly from
Mac versions of software (like Photoshop). Not all, but the vast
majority. I even tried the Win version of the CD, and same deal (the
differences in screen shots are subtle these days, but they can be
spotted by a trained eye). Also, the vast majority of images showing
pro photographers at work feature Macintosh (rather than Wintel)
laptops and desktops. (Recall this is a Canon product.) Just thought
I'd mention that tidbit ;-)
Nevertheless, my favorite quote on the CD: "Don't get so caught up in
the technical stuff that you forget to capture the image." -Seth
