I share your fascination.
Within the E.U. everyone has worked towards an interoperable print
market, Heidelberg, Esko-Graphics, Hewlett-Packard, EFI, GretagMacbeth
. . .
Printing specifications and printing standards are the extension of
printing associations who use them to underwrite CMYK interchange.
Conversion specifications and conversion technologies are the extension
of printing associations in the same way because they live and die by
the associations.
This suggests that printing standards and conversion standards can as
easily be used inclusively as they can be used exclusively in
controlling markets.
I hope this is not what is going on, though.
