I know your issue is almost solved, but my answer might be interesting
for your anway. I agree with others that a pure visual calibration will
be not easy. Calibrating with a measurement device is also not perfect,
because the colorimeters/spectrophotometers might give "wrong" values,
because of the observer or lighting metamerie and last not least because
of color appearance effects. Right now I think the best way might be to
use a calibration softare/hardware package and then manually to fine-tune
the calibration curves if nessecary.
In addition to the other mentioned calibration packages Quatographic's
"silver haze" calibration bundle will be available in the next weeks in
version 2.0. This version has improved calibration algorithms, the
ability to write a matrix or LUT based profile, an extended test routine
and also offers a curves overview, where you can fine-tune the
calibration curves to your specific needs -- visually taking into account
the ambient and your specific proof light and your soft-proof setup.

You've used EyeOne Pro, right? Then I don't think using any of the above
mentioned colorimeters and calibration software will do better, not to
say that all calibration solutions all would be equal, but I don't think
you'll be totally satisfied because of the inherent problems listed above.

If you still like to tinker with this, please post your results. We're
surely interested to learn from your experience too.
Good luck
