I agree with the devil's advocate. You can improve your ability to reach a
"standard" when you utilize plate curves.
The color standard may have been created running linear plates but may not
be achievable on an older press or at higher line screens (stochastic).
Once you have your solids and traps matching to your standard, your gains
and contrasts can be adjusted with curves.
Anyone that has successfully produce high quality stochastic work knows the
value of the plate curves. I have been involved in stochastic calibration on
a 30 year old web press that printed incredibly well once the curves had
been implemented. We targeted TR004 "color standards" while running a 21
micron spot. We didn't change fountain solutions, ink, packing or blankets.
We ran to the Gracol densities and calibrated from there.
TROO4 is far from being a failure. It has just raised the expectations of
customers. Now customers are seeing how good print can look when it is clean
and bright with good density.
The spec is for the "color" the press conditions are how it was run. The
same dot gain can produce very different color. Example, you can get a 20%
dot gain on magenta and a 20% dot gain on cyan. Both are 20% but obviously
they are different colors. Don't get hung up on the gain numbers start
utilizing LAB numbers as your guide.
Just my 3.873 cents.
